Dort, wo man Rechtsanwälte isst. Karibische Früchte, Sinneserfahrungen und die Materialität des Abwesenden, in: Brendecke, Arndt (Ed.): Praktiken der Frühen Neuzeit. Akteure – Handlungen – Artefakte

For travellers, soldiers and settlers in the eighteenth-century Caribbean colonies, exotic fruit are important material and sensory aids to contextualising themselves in their global existences. But these fruit cannot be studied as material historical objects, since they did not stand the test of time – based on fruit described in letters within the Prize Papers Collection, it is discussed why studying past, absent materialities is a worthwhile endeavour.

In Gelb! Selbstentwürfe eines Mannes im Fieber, in: Freist, Dagmar (Hg.): Diskurse – Körper – Artefakte. Historische Praxeologie in der Frühneuzeitforschung 2015
S. 243-263.

In 1803, the napoleonic officer Lelong writes several detailed letters in which he describes an attack of yellow fever he suffered in Martinique. A close reading of his descriptions allows the identification of elements relating to discourses of masculinity in contexts of yellow fever, enlightenment, and colonialism; and thus the retracing of a narrative of a young man who, „in the new world“, as he writes, is being tried as to the core of his masculinity by a disease.

Die Ruhe nach dem Sturm. Praxeologische Annäherungen an das Schweigen, in: Haasis, Lucas/Rieske, Constantin (Eds.): Historische Praxeologie.
Dimensionen vergangenen Handelns, Paderborn 2015, PP. 73 -87.

Letters from the eighteenth-century French colonies deal with calamities of all kind on a regular basis ; with diseases, war, rebellion, and hurricanes. But when, in 1780, the « grand ouragan » wreaks terrible havoc in the Caribbean, many of the letters do not even mention the catastrophe. By means of Theodore Schatzki’s « Social Site »-concept, this article experiments with explanations for the silence.
