Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the National Research University – Higher School of Economics, I am stating our wish to take part in the development of the international MA program in Microhistory. At least two of our campuses, in Moscow and in Saint-Petersburg, may participate in this venture.

Our School of History forms part of the Faculty for Humanities (Moscow campus), which includes also schools of Philosophy, Philology, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, and the Department of Foreign Languages. Overall, the Faculty of Humanities is a strong interdisciplinary research and education unit; the merger of previously autonomous schools (previously called faculties) from January 2015 intends to bring further coordination in the field of research and education in the humanities at our university.

The School of History employs the faculty of over 50 scholars in history and history of art, with a special emphasis on the European Mediaeval History, the Russian Imperial History (especially the eighteenth century), the Soviet History, and the Theory of History. Among scholars whose field of research and expertise includes Microhistory are Prof. Alexander Kamenskiy, Prof. Elena Smilyanskya and Associate Prof. Evgeny Akelyev (Russian seventeenth – eighteenth century history), Prof. Elena Vishlenkova (Russian nineteenth century history), Prof. Mikhail Boytsov (German Middle Ages); this list is by no means exhausting. Various subjects from Microhistory are included in courses both on the BA and MA levels usually within courses on the Social History.

The language of instruction is predominantly Russian, though we are increasing the English-language teaching with a goal of bringing the proportion of English-language courses to the 20 per cent of our curriculum. Academic advisors may provide support in English and other major European languages. Our Saint-Petersburg campus has recently launched an English-language MA called Applied and Interdisciplinary History “Usable Pasts” https://spb.hse.ru/en/ma/apphist. We may also provide intensive Russian language training for our visiting students.

Our main internationalisation tasks in education lie in developing joint MA programmes (a good example are joint MA degrees with Paris-IV in History and Philosophy scheduled to be launched from 2016/2017 academic year) and attracting international students. We agree with teaching courses that are part of an MA programme accredited in the partner university.

If our university acts as a provider of courses for an MA degree accredited by the partner university not acting on the student exchange basis, then we are charging for our education services. The tuition fee is negotiable but would not be less than ca. 3800 USD p.a. (1900 per semester). Accommodation costs (in our dormitory) are less than 100 USD per month.

Respectfully submitted,

Andrey Isérov
