Helen Rees is a professor in the Department of Ethnomusicology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and director of the World Music Center at UCLA. She is a specialist in Chinese music, with particular interests in the multi-ethnic southwestern border province of Yunnan and the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. Her work includes field and archival research, and encompasses both the contemporary musical scenes and musical history since the late 19^th century.
